Big and Small Sable Lakes
It is one of the most beautiful places in Khamar-Daban. They are surrounded by picturesque mountain peaks. The lakes are located 20 kilometers south of the Vydrino railway station, on the Selenginka River.
This is one lake, which is divided by a narrow channel into the Small and Large one. The total length of the lake is about 2.5 kilometers, the depth is about 50 meters, the width reaches 600 meters. The reason for the formation of the lake was the backwater of the Selenginka river with a shaft of terminal moraine promoted by the glacier.
You can catch grayling in the lake. Local hunters claim that even the legendary Baikal sable can be found in these parts. The water in the lakes is very cold. There is a nice sandy beach in the place where the river flows into the lake. There are many forest berries around the lake — lingonberries, blueberries, currants, raspberries, etc. The mushrooms ripen by the end of summer. These clean taiga lakes will appeal to those who want to spend a vacation away from the bustle of the city, outdoor.
It's not so long ago that Sable Lakes were very popular among organized tourists who took a simple “planned” route. And now along the trail that leads to the lakes, you can see the marks left by many generations of tourists. But when the suspension bridge over the Selenginka river collapsed, it became difficult to get to the lakes. One had to cross the fast, high-water river ford. A new bridge over the river was built in 2008. It is located a little higher up the river than the one that was destroyed. Nowadays, you can visit the lakes on your own or with an organized group of tourists.
The route to the lakes starts from Vydrino station. It can be reached by train. Then you will have to get to the Irkutsk-Ulan-Ude highway, and along the highway to the automobile bridge over the Snezhnaya River.
Then you have to go along the path that runs along the right bank of the Snezhnaya River, through a dense mixed forest. The relic poplars are struck in three girths, which grow in abundance in this forest. In a few hours, you will come to the mouth of the Selenginka River. There are many convenient camping spaces.
The new bridge across the Selenginka was built 500 meters above the mouth. Further along the left bank of the river, there is a good hiking trail. It is surrounded by piles of stones overgrown with cedar dwarf. After 5 kilometers, the mountains split. You will see the expanse of lakes connected by a small channel.
A little higher than the lakes, on the left tributary of the Selenginka, the Krasnaya River, there is a waterfall called Skazka (Fairy Tale). Its height is about 20 meters. Further downstream there are several more small waterfalls.
