Holy Nose is a peninsula in the east of Lake Baikal
It is the largest one on the whole lake and part of the Zabaikalsky National Park. It used to be an island, but gradually the sandy Chivyrkuy isthmus was washed with water, connecting it with the land. The width of the isthmus is from 8 to 18 km, and a large lake Arangatuy was formed in the center of it. Holy Nose divides two large bays of Lake Baikal: Barguzinsky and Chivyrkuisky. The peninsula resembles a nose in shape due to the mountainous terrain, and the Buryats call it the “sturgeon face”.
What to see
Most hiking trails are laid from the Monakhovo
villages located on both sides of Chivyrkuy isthmus at the base of the peninsula. The distance to them from Ust – Barguzin is 44 and 30 km, respectively. Tourists usually put up tents there and go to the mountains. Two more popular places are Katun
, they are famous for sandy beaches. The rest of the coast is large-pebbled.
The average height of the mountains on the Holy Nose is 800 metres, and the highest point, the mountain of Markov, reaches almost 2 km at its top. A hiking trail from Glinka village is rather steep, mostly along talus slopes, so climbing requires good physical shape. It is especially difficult to scale in the heat and rain - the trail is called the "trial trail" for a reason. The top of the mountain is not a peak, but a plateau overgrown with shrubs, from where views of both bays, isthmus with Arangatui lake and mountains open.
The small lakes at the top can be mistaken for swamps, but in fact, the water in them is good for drinking, which is very helpful after a hard climb.
In Glinka village tourists can see the remains of marble stairs and low stone walls - it seems as if there was some kind of palace. But it turns out that this is a campsite that burned down before it could open. From Monakhovo, a path to the Zmeinaya Bay with hot mineral springs is laid. You can go there to take therapeutic baths on a boat from the pier of the village. For a small fee, locals can take you for a boat trip any part of the Holy Nose.
Another popular attraction is Kulinye Swamps
with gas springs on the Chivyrkuy Isthmus. Mud volcanoes are called the gas springs, there are about 120 of them, some reach 7 meters in diameter. Some are terrestrial, others are underwater. They are active, therefore, residents of Kulinoe village, which was nearby, left it because of the poisoning threat.
Baikal, Barguzinsky district, Holy Nose. GPS coordinates: 53.682004, 108.840335.
Right after the bridge, turn left to the Zabaikalsky National Park checkpoint. They issue a pass and charge a fee: for a car - 500 RUB, for an adult - 100 RUB per day, children and senior citizens pass for free. On the isthmus, the road is sandy, not very good, but passable.
