Muysky District


The district is located in the northern part of Buryatia. It was established in 1989, its area is 25 164 square kilometers. The center of the district is Taksimo village; the distance to Ulan-Ude is 1030 kilometers.


There is a unique engineering structure in Muysky District – the Severomuisky Tunnel. Its length is more than 15 kilometers; it is the largest tunnel on the territory of the former USSR and the fifth in length in the world. It passes through the Severomuisky ridge at a depth of 1,000 meters.


Muyskaya valley is one of the most mysterious and beautiful places in Buryatia. Nature here is picture-perfect and diverse: mineral springs, lakes, rivers, virgin forests that cover the mountain ranges. The valleys are rich in geological, aquatic and archaeological monuments of nature.

The Muysky Giant

The mountain peak of Muysky Giant is located 49 kilometers from the village of Taksimo. Its height is 3,067 meters; it is the highest peak of the South-Muysky ridge in the Northern Transbaikalia. The mountain is very popular with climbers from all over the world.

Thermal springs

The most popular mineral springs of the region are the Muysky, Taksimovsky, and Tolmachevsky. Their thermal waters help in the treatment of many diseases. The flora near the sources is unusually picturesque for the northern region. The heat-loving plants grow there: huge aspen of more than a meter in diameter, ferns up to two meters high.

Irkutskaya Cave

It is located 18 kilometers from the village of Taksimo. Its length is 88 meters. It is a monument of archeology and is famous for petroglyphs, preserved from the Bronze Age – the beginning of the Iron Age. Geometric drawings, crosses, circles, a stylized drawing of animal, three-horned figures of shamans are depicted on the walls of the cave. Images of shamans are unique in the manner of performance, in Eastern Siberia; there are no analogs of such images. Some fragments of ceramics were also found in the cave.

Lake Ulto

It is located 1 km from the village of Taksimo. This lake is a favorite place for recreation of residents and guests of the area. At a relatively shallow depth (up to 5-6 meters), water warms up during the summer months to +22 degrees Celsius. The lake reflects the mountain peaks of the South-Muysky Range.
