The district is located in the central part of Buryatia. It was established in 1939, the area of the district is 2067 square kilometers. The center of the district is the village of Ivolginsk, located in 29 kilometers from Ulan-Ude.
The spiritual capital of the Buddhist traditional sangha of Russia is Ivolginsky datsan, opened in Buryatia in 1945. Here is the residence of the Pandito Khambo Lama - the head of the Buddhists of Russia. On the territory of the monastery, in addition to a dozen different temples (dugans), there are sacred stupas (suburgans), educational buildings of the first Buddhist university, the datsan history museum, art gallery, art workshop, hotel, and clergy houses.
On the territory of the Ivolginsky district there is the center of Russian Buddhism. Ivolginsky Datsan is the residence of the head of the Buddhists of Russia Pandito Hambo Lama. The Buddhist university functions at the Datsan, many priceless relics are kept and the main one is the incorruptible body of Pandito Hambo Lama XII Dashi-Dorzho Itigelov. Every year the datsan is visited by thousands of pilgrims and tourists from different countries.
There is the stupa “Badma-Seseg” in the Ivolginsky district. The height of the stupa is 9 meters. A pillar of cedar with prayers and books in Tibetan is stained in it. The stupa is decorated with the symbol of eternity – soyembo. “Badma-Seseg” is a place of Buddhists’ pilgrimage.
Ivolginsky district is rich in archaeological and natural monuments. There are the sites of ancient Paleolithic and Neolithic people, tile burial grounds and an outstanding monument of the Hunnu fortified city, which is more than 2000 years old, have been identified there.
Memorial place “Geser’s Encampment” is located on the high, rocky coast of Selenga in front of the bridge across the river. According to legend, in this place, Geser tied his heavenly horses and rested before a long journey. The place is sacred since ancient times, at the foot of the mountain before the road construction there were petroglyphs depicting a deer bearing the sun on its horns. The complex consists of a deer stone, a stone with ancient symbols and an inscription, tethering post and a shelter shed of Geser. A wide panorama of the Selenga Valley and the city of Ulan-Ude opens from the mountain. There is a sculptural composition of two deer On the cliff.
Healing spring with cold water, which is used for the treatment of joint diseases.
From Buryat – a “rich peacock”. This hill from afar looks like the figure of a sitting bird. It is located near the village of Ivolga. Drawings of the Bronze Age were found in the cave of the hill. In ancient times the cave had 14 entrances and was used for habitation. At the top of the hill there is a Buddhist stupa.
Gurulbinsky reserve is a complex one; it is inhabited by wapiti, wild boar, wood grouse, roe deer and other animals. On the territory of the Kokorinsky reserve, there is a wetland among the steppe, which is a natural phenomenon. More than 100 gray herons nestle there every year. These places are considered sacred among local residents.
